While it’s been quiet here since September, believe it or not, I have been watching and writing and working on things - including catching up with 2025 releases! After all, the nominees for the 98th Academy Awards will be announced January 22nd, just eight days hence….
I watched 101 films given a 2025 US release, though two of them are borderline. Fountain of Youth was, as far as I know, a straight-to-streaming release, but its receiving an MPAA rating suggests that it must have been released, or at least screened, somewhere theatrically! Besides, it just, I don’t know, feels weird to call a John Krasinski-Natalie Portman-Guy Ritchie narrative not a movie-movie.
Meanwhile, though one can argue that Taylor Swift | The Official Release Party of a Showgirl does not a movie make - it being a series of lyric videos preceded by static shots of Swift explaining each song, interspersed with behind-the-scenes footage of the filming of the “The Fate of Ophelia” music video that bookends the film (yes, it’s played twice) - I say, why not? It’s not the most dynamic execution, but it is a documentary, not just about the making of a music video, but about the development of an album from a lyricist’s perspective, all with the intention of playing in cinemas for a movie-going audience. That counts!
So, before next Thursday, I’ll talk more about my favorites of the year, but until then, here are the 101 films I watched:
